The Colosseum in Italy’s capital, Rome, is to be rebuilt. Not entirely, though. The Italian government are looking to rebuild the floor and return it to its former glory.
The government has pledged £16.7 million (€18.5 million) to built the retractable floor with mechanical trap doors enclosing and concealing its network of tunnels and cages. “The reconstruction… is a great idea which has gone around the world,” Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said in a statement.
“It will be a major technological intervention that will offer visitors the opportunity to, not only see the underground rooms… but also appreciate the beauty of the Colosseum while standing in the centre of the arena,” he added.
The new floor will stop the elements from further deteriorating the labyrinth of tunnels of the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire and should be completed by 2023.
