Lazzarini Pagurus – Solar powered Catamaran

Pierpaolo Lazzarini, the person behind Lazzarini Design Studio has created a solar powered catamaran that doubles as an amphibious vehicle.

Known as the Pagurus, named after a genus of hermit crabs, this 82ft catamaran is solar powered helping it get from sea to land. When the sun isn’t powerful enough, twin 890hp diesel engines, power the props moving the ‘pagurus’ to an estimated top speed of 24 knots.

The Pagurus has a trick up its sleeve though. Whilst the yacht is in motion on open water, the submersed sections house large 6.5m helical screws that spin with the friction of water allowing it to charge the onboard batteries. These four screws are also connected to an engine, independent of those running the propellers, which generate up to five knots of additional power.

These screws can then be lowered further and used as propulsion devices when on land, moving the yacht on sand or mud up to 30 km/h.

The yacht is subdivided in two living sections configure on each side with two or three bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, accommodating up to eight passengers, plus four crew members. The two hulls are interconnected by a bridge tower deck which houses the main dining area, that, can be lowered down so that guest can eat on the water. If the owner prefers it can also be used to house a vehicle that can be used when the yacht reaches land.

Prices are said to start at €24,000,000 and can be optioned in a multitude of colours.

Cujo by Baglietto – A yacht with provenance

Cujo might be familiar to some – you may have seen it on Instagram and unknown to others. Simon Kidston, one the world’s leading classic car dealers purchased the yacht at Retromobile in February 2020 for an astonishing sum. Now Cujo has a fantastic history, linked to royals, hollywood stars and amazing cars.

Originally commissioned by John von Neumann – not the von Neumann who worked on the Manhattan Project but the John von Neumann, a racing driver who ran one of the first Volkswagen facilities in America, owner of the California Sports Car Club and lets not forget owned and raced Ferraris – a 1957 TRC, one of the most successful privately campaigned Ferraris in history. He had a penchant for speed and the same was to be of his yacht. When it was commissioned in 1972 from Baglietto, von Neumann asked for it ‘to be the fastest thing floating in the world.’

Baglietto has been in the shipbuilding business for over 165 years, starting off in 1854 building small fishing boats before specialising in the design and building of yachts. Over the decades, Baglietto yard designed and built boats for the Pope, Italian government, Spanish Royalty and movie stars all along the way breaking records and implementing new production techniques.

Baglietto happily obliged with the request and Cujo was fitted with two V18 turbo diesel engines putting out a combined output of 2,700hp, enough for it to hit 40 knots on open water. When cruising, Cujo was able to travel across the Mediterranean in all direction – 460 miles. John enjoyed Cujo for a number of years before the need for speed bit again – so he ordered a bigger and faster yacht.

From there Cujo was sold to Mohammed Khashoggi (related to the journalist that was assassinated at the Saudi consulate in Turkey) who passed it on to his first cousin, Dodi Al-Fayed. Dodi was smitten with Cujo, had it refitted in a more opulent fashion and was then seen in St Tropez on it constantly, moored opposite Cafe de Paris. The yacht could easily be mistaken for a military ship, not just for its speed but it is painted in a gunship grey.

Al-Fayed, an executive producer on a couple of Hollywood films was known to welcome stars on Cujo – Bruce Willis, Tony Curtis and Clint Eastwood to name but a few. It was the guest in 1997 that really got people’s attention – Princess Diana.

Lady Diana spent many time on Cujo during August 1997 before her and Dodi’s untimely deaths in Paris. Unfortunately for Cujo, the vessel fell from grace and was used as a personal water taxi and lifeboat for Mohammed Al-Fayed’s larger yacht until 1999. It was then decommissioned and left in dry storage for many years.

Thankfully, Moody Al-Fayed, Dodi’s cousin and owner of the Harrods liveried McLaren F1 GTR, chassis 06R, that placed 3rd at the Le Mans 24 Hours, driven by Andy Wallace, Derek and Justin Bell, couldn’t stand the sight of it in disrepair and spent an astonishing €800,000 to restore it to its former glory. He enjoyed it for two seasons, with it being seen across the Amalfi coast and Sardinia until family commitments took up the boating time.

When Moody offered Cujo for sale, he had one request – the new owner needs to have as much love for the yacht as Dodi did. I think Moody has truly found the man that will respect and cherish this boat as much as its previous owners.

Motor Yacht A tenders – Starck Design

Motor Yacht A and Sailing Yacht A are some of the most spectacular and largest private yachts ever designed and built. Crafted by famed designer Philippe Starck, these are examples of sheer opulence that even multi-millionaires dream of.

The tenders are things of beauty and more attainable for mere mortals when our heads hit the pillow. For Motor Yacht A, Starck designed two stunning 11m tenders called the Limo Tender and the Open Tender to be used for two specific purposes.

Limo Tender is simply used to shuttle guests and the owner, Andrey Melnichenko, to shore and back. It features a beautiful teak and holly deck and bow, but that’s not the stand out feature. That lies to the interior. One that is so plush that it surpasses five star hotels with 1.9m of headroom, supple looking armchairs and sofas allowing guests to relax as they are chauffeured to shore.

The Open Tender on the other hand is more a service tender than anything else. With an open compartment, it allows the crew to access elements of Motor Yacht A’s bow and sides, but that didn’t stop Starck from designing it to be as unique as its sister tender, with its circular guest compartment.

Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 -a superyacht for the Lamborghini driver

Lamborghini and The Italian Sea Group have worked together to present the limited edition ‘Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63’ yacht celebrating the automotive manufacturer’s birth in 1963.

Inspired by the Lamborghini Sián FPK 37 and countless collaboration sessions with Lamborghini’s Centro Stile, the yacht is fitted with two MAN V12-2000 hp engines capable of reaching 60 knots, making it the fastest of the Tecnomar fleet.

Carbon fibre is used throughout the 63 foot yacht, classing this as ultra-lightweight weighing in at under 24 tons. Looking at it, you immediately know it is influenced by Lamborghini cars with a nautical theme. The hull and superstructure are created from a high performance shell, interpreting the lines created by Marcello Gandini in the Miura and Countach.

The hard top is inspired by Lamborghini roadsters guaranteeing aerodynamic performance whilst providing sun and wind protection whilst the bow lights are an homage to the Terzo Millenio concept and the Sian FKP 37.

The interior of the Tecnomar includes Lamborghini’s clean lines, hexagon shapes, Y-motifs and materials. The instrument panel interprets the car’s cockpit in a nautical style integrating the navigation and control systems, with the traditional Lamborghini start stop button for each V12 engine. As with Lamborghini road cars, there is plenty of carbon fibre with it used in the seats and on the helm. Buyers are able to choose from two interiors with a myriad combination of materials. They can also pick a number of exterior colours and liveries to match their Lamborghini parked at the marina.

The first boat will be available at the beginning of 2021.

Iguana Yachts
