Oakley is bringing back the OverTheTop sunglasses

Who remembers the 2000 Sydney Olympics? Oakley gave a pair of the craziest looking sunglasses to Trinidad and Tobago Ato Boldon to wear during the 4x100m semi-final sprint. Ato did go on to get two medal albeit not wearing the glasses, but nonetheless it was a successful marketing campaign.

The OVERTHETOP sunglasses wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Matrix, and now 20 years on Oakley is bringing it back to commemorate what was meant to be the end of the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Said to be built from the same mold as the original, Oakley released 20 pairs on Friday for $2,000 and then the mold will be retired, never to see the light of day again.

The 2020 version named “Precious Mettle” features a gradient color scheme fading from aged gold to silver and bronze at the back. The lenses have been updated to Oakley’s Prizm technology helping to boost contrast.
